What is Dental Bonding?
A nice smile can say a lot about a person. It shows that you are confident, outgoing, and worth getting to know. However, a person who is not happy with their teeth may smile less often and even shy away from others, which can be misleading.
If you are having problems with your teeth, one option to consider is dental bonding. It can be used to:
- Repair chipped or cracked teeth
- Change the shape of teeth
- Close gaps between teeth
- Protect exposed root due to receding gums
- Repair decayed teeth to avoid extraction
The Bonding Procedure
Dental bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure where a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture (resin) is bonded to the tooth. The procedure is a lot simpler than veneers because it can be done in a single office visit, and unless it is being used to fill a decayed tooth, anesthesia is usually not given. Other advantages to bonding is that it is the least expensive of cosmetic dental procedures and less tooth enamel is removed than when prepping for dental veneers and crowns.
Step 1: When it’s time to begin the procedure, the dentist will first match the resin color to the other teeth. They accomplish this by using a shade guide. Sometimes teeth whitening may be suggested in order to see the natural color of your teeth. If so, there will be a 2-3 week wait before continuing with the process.
Step 2: Once the color of the resin is selected, the tooth will need to be grated using a phosphoric acid solution.
Step 3: After grating the tooth, the dentist will apply a conditioning liquid (used to strengthen the bond) followed by the bonding material, which is then molded into the proper shape. An ultraviolet light is then used to harden the resin.
Step 4: Once it hardens, the dentist will complete the procedure by trimming and shaping the tooth for a proper fit and nice feel.
Step 5: To wrap things up, the dentist will create an appropriate finish to prevent the resin from removing or causing tooth sensitivity. The entire procedure should take less than an hour for each tooth.
