Mini Dental Implants (or MDI’s) are tiny dental implants which are similar to the size of a screw that act as a substitute for the natural root of the tooth. Mini dental implants are a great alternative for patients who don’t like the idea of invasive surgery, ill-fitting dentures and multiple office visits. Mini dental implants can be used for patients who need to: stabilize their dentures, have partial dental implants, or even those who need to get full dental implants.Mini dental implants are approved by the FDA and are made out of the same titanium alloy that traditional full implants are made of, but are much more narrow. This allows for placement where traditional implants can’t go. Some of the advantages of Mini Dental Implants include:
- Cheaper cost
- No cutting required
- Quick treatment time
- Better fit with dentures
- No rotting food beneath dentures
- No slipping or discomfort when added to dentures
- Clearer speech than with dentures alone
Mini Dental Implant Procedure
Before the procedure, our dentist will have already taken some time to find the best placement for the dental implants. Once ready, our dentist will begin by giving the patient an anesthetic. Then a small hole is drilled into the jawbone to accommodate each mini dental implant. If you are doing a full set of implants, upper and lower, a total of eight holes will need to be drilled – four each for the top and bottom. Then the individual implants are screwed into place and tightened. Once the mini dental implants are fully stabilized, the denture is measured against the mini dental implants and marked to ensure proper alignment. The denture is then sent to a laboratory to have the holes drilled to accommodate the mini dental implants. As soon as the denture is ready, it is then affixed to the mini dental implants. The denture snaps into place and then rests firmly on the gum tissue. This placement is held comfortably and secure for a lifetime.
